Being the capital of the Philippines, Metro Manila has become the metropolis it is today. All those tall buildings, a combination of history and modernity, now house offices catering to providers to both international and local clientele.

But Manila doesn’t stop there. Manila Bulletin reported that a government organization and one sector want to expand in the city further.

The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) and the IT-business process management (BPM) industry wants to have an extension on the 30-day deadline of the transition period ordered by Malacanang.

This extension is for PEZA and IT-BPM to complete their requirements for their special IT economic zone development applications under the Administrative Order No. 18 issued by MalacaƱang on June 17, 2019. Those who passed all the requirements are granted Presidential Proclamations.

Charito Plaza, PEZA Director-General, said they are asking for at least six months extension from the transitory provision.

The provision bans IT parks and buildings special ecozone developments in Metro Manila indefinitely, shifting the focus in the regions to help develop the countryside.

As for the approved applications and already endorsed by PEZA to Malacanang, IT ecozone developers are required to complete their requirements within 30 days.

So far, there are 42 IT special ecozones already endorsed to the Malacanang since President Rodrigo Duterte took office on June 2017, according to PEZA Deputy Director-General Tereso Panga. Within this number, 22 are supposed to locate in Metro Manila.

On the other hand, 131 special IT ecozone projects for Metro Manila already got PEZA’s approval, but are not yet endorsed to Malacanang. Among the 131 special IT ecozone projects, 121 are IT centers and 10 are IT parks.
