Even though is a looming presence of fear in the workforce of losing their jobs due to the arrival of automation in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry of the Philippines, not only experts are stepping in to alleviate the panic, but the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), too. For NEDA, it believes that the BPO industry still has time to make preparations, the Philippine Star reported.
Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia said in a briefing last week that the industry, which is the country’s number one job-generating economic sub-sector, still has enough time to improve the skills of the workforce in learning the use of emerging technologies and the said skill to their work tasks.
“I think there is increasing awareness that certain regular jobs we are used to will be taken by technology. But it’s not going to happen overnight. It’s more likely to happen in around five years’ time,” he said, the Philippine Star quoted.
“There is a need for firms to begin to prepare for the inevitable. But it’s not going to happen this time. (Philippine) BPOs are still expanding; they just need to upscale their operations to high value operations,” he said, the Philippine Star quoted.
There were concerns swirling about emerging technologies after the proposed protectionist policies by the US in 2016. These concerns were able to ruffle the industry, but NEDA said it will create a safety net for the sector by including more services in its offerings, such as more non-voice services like creatives (animation), medical and legal transcription, and accounting among others, the Philippine Star reported.
Even though this is the case, there are already businesses in the BPO sector that have adopted the emerging technologies. Some, such as outsourcing firms, have already trained their staff to have a pool of well-trained and skilled talents to be deployed.
